KUCHING:Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s recent visit to Julau is an official visit on behalf of the federal government to fulfil their obligations to the people and not a campaigning tactic for the upcoming PKR election candidates on Saturday.

To recap, the DPM’s recent visit to Julau has caused some unrest within the local political scene as some observers commented that the move was potentially a campaigning tactic for the upcoming PKR election as Julau MP, Larry Sng was clearly in the camp of Rafizi Ramli who is challenging the incumbent Datuk Seri Azmin Ali for the party’s deputy presidency.

Most prominently, PKR central committee member Latheefa Koya has vocally denounced the visit as inappropriate and highly questionable as she noted that the Julau division is currently under fire from several controversies, including reports of a sudden increase of PKR membership to 13,000 that has prompted an arrest of a PKR leader by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and continued investigations into the sudden increase.

There is no conceivable reason why Wan Azizahs visit must be carried out on the very eve of the PKR party election in Sarawak. Why could the deputy prime minister not visit after the party election?

Additionally, Latheefa also added that the visit from the DPM also included an announcement that RM100,000 of funds would be allocated for a road in Julau.

In these circumstances, it is imperative that the deputy prime minister explain the reason and circumstances of her visit to Julau on the eve of the Sarawak PKR election/

The public is entitled to know, she stressed.

Hitting back at these claims, Sng explained that the recent visit from Wan Azizah was indeed an official visit that involved use of her official position and government assets.

“She was in Julau on official duties, so whats the issue. Latheefa, should understand that the DPM is working to develop rural Sarawak which has been left behind by BN government. Not everything is about politics. Serving the people comes first,” said Sng to The Borneo Post Online during an interview.

Rather than throw accusations, PKR leaders should instead be happy and proud that DPM Wan Azizah is willing to visit Julau, a remote area which has been neglected by the the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government, said Sng.

He went on to insist that many other PKR leaders had also paid visits to Julau, including federal Housing and Local Government Minister, Zuraida Kamaruddin who came one day before Datuk Seri Wan Azizah.

She came to campaign with other leaders and that function was attended by only 55 people including small children. YAB Dato Seri Dr Wan Azizah was in Julau on Tuesday, the same day when YB Azmin was in Kuching, Larry quipped.

When told that Latheefa was also questioning why the DPM was willing to be pictured prominently with him the Julau MP, Larry quickly replied that he was the host of the visit.

I never met her before. But she (Latheefa) seems obsessed with me. Someone should tell her I am married, Larry cheekily replied.

When asked about the feedback from the DPM, Larry said Wan Azizah is concerned about infrastructure and pepper price.

The DPM announce RM100,000 road resurfacing for the longhouse which has 200 residents and is looking into other projects subject to approval from EPU, he said, referring to the project that was blown out by Latheefa.

Larry insisted that in the previous election, only 16 people went out voting for the PKR election.

Maybe the other 607 voters previously are phantom voters, he quipped, sarcastically.

Larry whom is happy to see Datuk Seri Azmin Ali on an official visit to Sarawak, wishes that the Minister of Economic Affairs will do much more for Sarawak than campaigning for his own political survival.

Please pay more attention to Sarawakian needs and aspirations, he said.

The irony is, Minister of Works Baru Bians political secretary Zakaria Abdul Hamid, the guy whom was being reported to have allegedly offered projects for votes was being pictured prominently together with Azmin Ali team during a Live video streaming, a
