KUCHING: All the dark stretches along Jalan Puncak Borneo here are expected to be lighted by 2021.
Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin said RM3 million had been allocated by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Malaysia to implement the street lighting project along the whole stretch, from Jalan Kota Padawan to Kampung Annah Rais.
He said he had personally wrote to the Minister Zuraidah Kamaruddin, who then announced the fund last year.
The project, he said, would be implemented in phases in which RM200,000 had been channeled to the Padawan Muncipal Council (PMC) to implement the first phase last year.
“I thank PMC, which successfully started the first phase. We can see now some of the dark stretches from Mile 14 have got the street lighting.
“I expect all the dark areas and curves along the whole stretches to be lighted up by next year; and of course the earlier the better,” he said.
He noted that PMC is the implementer of the street lighting projects.
Willie said aside from the street lighting, he had also requested for funds from the Ministry of Rural Development Malaysia to light up the village roads in Puncak Borneo.
He said last year alone, a total 1,602 units of village road lighting were installed in the various villages within his constituency.
Funded by the federal government, he said the village roads lighting project was implemented by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
