SIEM REAP, Cambodia: Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said today that the Sarawak government is prepared to exhaust all channels to help bring home the 40 Sarawakians who are being held at a provincial jail here.
The 40 Sarawakians are among the 47 Malaysians being arrested in the Poipet City on Dec 11 last year over alleged involvement in illegal online gambling.
Fatimah pledged that the Sarawak government will provide the resources if those Sarawakian detainees need any assistance including legal assistance.
According to her, Cambodian police are looking into the arrest of the detainees who are accused of being involved in illegal online gambling.
She added that there are legal procedures to adhere to.
“We are collaborating with the Cambodian government on this issue. Like what Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has said, we must opt for proper legal procedures when dealing with this matter,” she told reporters when leading a delegation to visit the detainees here.
Fatimah hoped that they would be able to hear some good news as soon as possible, particularly about the release of the detainees.
Santubong MP Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar is also in the delegation.
