KUCHING (June 7): Police have arrested four individuals, including the mother of a two-year-old boy, who was reported to have died from suspected abuse to assist in the case investigation.
Betong district police chief DSP Zamry Alli said the four individuals, aged between 22 and 65 years old, were family members of the boy.
“Investigations are being conducted under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and if convicted, the accused will be sentenced to death,” he said in a statement today.
He further explained that a remand application for all of the suspects would be made to enable the police to conduct further investigation.
Commenting further on the case, Zamry said, at around 3.45pm yesterday, he was informed by a medical officer from Betong Hospital regarding the case of a two-year-old boy who had died on suspected abuse.
“Acting on the information, the police went to Betong Hospital and confirmed that a child had died when he was sent to the hospital by his family at around 3pm.
“The medical officer’s examination results revealed there were some injuries and bruises on some parts of the child’s body which may have been the cause of death,” he added
As a result, he said, all four suspects, including the child’s mother, were arrested for further investigation.
In the meantime, he appealed to the public not to make any speculation related to this case.
“Leave it to the police to conduct a thorough investigation to identify the party responsible for the child’s death,” he said.
Earlier, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail, who confirmed the incident, said the child’s mother and boyfriend were detained for further investigation into the case.
“This case is still under investigation. I cannot provide further information other than to confirm that there is a report made by the Betong Hospital about the death of a two-year-old child who had bruises on the body of the deceased.
“The mother and boyfriend of the child’s mother are now detained for further investigation,” he said via WhatsApp.
The case went viral on social media which displayed pictures of the two suspects with the children.
